Ahh refreshing! This article just said a whole bunch of things I’ve been trying to say for some time now. Until the world stops trying to rely on “quick fixes” to the Obesity problem, the rates will continue to climb.
It is American’s beliefs in products that not only aren’t working, but very often are fraudulent that is causing so many people to believe they are on the right track about correcting their obesity, but really aren’t. The article I just said says:
“…60% of Americans believe incorrectly that over-the-counter dietary supplements for weight loss are required to have been tested and proven to be safe and effective. More than half mistakenly believed that these products are reviewed and approved by the Food and Drug Administration.”
Bottom line folks, lets focus on exercise not supplements. Proper diet, not quick fixes. You can beat this, I promise, just go “old school” and beat it the old fashion way!

A new experimental drug is being applauded not only for its anti-obesity capabilities, but also because it seems to be successfully lowering health risks of Type 2 Diabetes.
You know how I feel about medications aimed at obesity, I’d much rather they be avoided, but sometimes they just can’t be for certain people. So, when I see medications that work on two separate elements of health risks related to obesity, I have to get a little excited.
Whatever the case may be, no matter how you feel about it, you should go read this article. It’s filled with interesting information about what could be the future of obesity medication. When you’re done, head over to Fit Express and start doing your Exercise research!

For the first time in history, well, that I know of, a city is actually beginning its legal hearings on whether or not the government has the right to step in and control an element of peoples diets. If passed in these hearings, New York City will become the first city in the United States to ban restaurants from using artificial trans fat in any of their food.
Wow. The article I just read says that per year, the average American eats 4.7lbs of trans fat; scientists now believe that trans fat is so dangerous, “it belongs in the same category as food spoiled by rodent droppings.”
To be honest, it is time something is done about this, and a whole slew of other things. Estimates say that trans fat helps lead to an additional 30,000 deaths a year by clogging arteries, raising bad cholesterol, and helping fuel heart disease. Not to mention the foods that usually are high in trans fat are almost always the same foods that are helping to fuel this obesity epidemic. I’m not one for the government sticking its nose into peoples business, but here, I AM!

Maybe this will be the perfect inspiration to get people to lose weight. Lets face facts, we’re all, and I do mean ALL, sick of paying huge prices for gas to fuel our cars, right? Right. That said, if we found out something was actually making us use MORE gas, we’d be upset, right? Right.
Well folks, something is. Us. That’s right, with obesity levels climbing, you’re actually using MORE gas than you ever would if you were of normal weight. The more you weigh, the more gas you need to get yourself down the road. Wow.
See, it’s seemed to me that lately health incentives aren’t driving people to make healthier changes to their life. Perhaps monetary ones Will. New slogans could be along the lines of “Lose Weight, Save Money at the Pump!” Or something like that.

We’ve got a food pyramid, so why not an exercise one as well? Hold tight American’s, one is on the way.
That’s right, Uncle Sam is gathering up as many health resources as it can find to develop the first ever Exercise Guidelines for citizens of this great country. The bummer is, they won’t be ready til 2008. Late 2008, according to reports.
So, while I’m glad they’re finally recognizing obesity as the epidemic it is, I am not happy that they are going to take 2 years to complete what I, and other fitness bloggers, complete on a daily basis. Note to Government: Obesity has been an epidemic for years now; the longer you wait, the worse it is going to get. Hurry up.

Here’s one for all you lovely ladies out there, as the research is still incomplete on the men’s side of things: Moderate daily exercise actually fights off the common cold!
That’s right, the research all comes together to prove that over the course of a year, the women in the study who participated in moderate exercise each week showed significant reductions in the amount of colds they had; furthermore, the exercise builds a stronger resistance to the cold over time. So, the longer you workout, the more your “cold fighters” get!
The best part of the results showed that near the end of the study, the non-exercisers showed 3 times the number of colds that the exercisers did. Wow. I’m sold.

Every now and again you see just how wide the scope of obesity’s effects are. Today was a day like that.
How about the fact that obesity has lead to an 87% increase in hip and knee replacement surgeries in Canada over the last 10 years. That’s right, people simply gaining more and more weight is leading to problems in joints and bones that may not have ever come up otherwise.
The article I just read said that in 2004-2005, 9 out of every 10 patients to have knee replacement surgery were overweight or obese. 8 out of 10 of the hip replacement surgeries were done on overweight or obese people.
It’s stats like these, ones you probably wouldn’t think of, that really drive the point home that obesity is literally ruining the health of our world.

You’d think I was making this one up, wouldn’t you? You’d think I just wanted you to think that exercise was a big cure-all. Well, guess what, it kind of is.
New research is showing that while nicotine replacement (gum, patch, etc) is a very useful and successful method of kicking the smoking habit, exercise during it, works far better. In the study, all the participants were placed on nicotine replacement therapy, only half were also placed on an exercise plan.
When the study was over, about half of the people on the first nicotine replacement therapy quit smoking; in the exercise group, an astonishing 80% of the participants quit. The cool thing is, by quitting, they successfully lost Two butts; the one in their hand, and the one they sit on.

As I just mentioned, the world we live in is fast pased, and everything is quicker today than it ever has been.
